Day Exploring the Aran Island
We were up early and on the bus at 8:30 to head off to Ferry to the Aran Islands. We landed in Kilronan on Inishmore and transferred to a coach to drive to Kilmurvey and then on to Dun Aenghus. This is a spectacular horseshoe-shaped stone fortress on a cliff facing west towards the Atlantic – truly the “edge of the world”. Next, we had a short stop at the seven churches site with ruins that date 8th-11th centuries. Lunch at a small thatched hut café with wonderful homemade tomato soup – perfect. Shopping in Kilronan and then we took the ferry back to the Galway area where Dennis, our bus driver, picked us up to drive us back to Galway. A large group of us decided to go for fish & chips at McDonaghs on Quay Street. Also a couple of us girls decided to stop at the local jewelers to purchase a claddagh ring, which originated from the Galway area. Then we walked along the River Corrib to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Back to town and a stop at An Pucan Pub for music and pints of a local brew, Galway Hooker. We finally made it home and passed out after a long day.
